April 5: Qing Ming - Paying Homage to Ancestors

The Qing Ming festival, a Chinese tradition that is celebrated on April 5, has long been seen as a way to earn respect and good fortune for future generations. It is derived from Taoism, Buddhism and regional folklore.

There are variations of the custom -- some over time, others based on geography -- but the purpose is universal: paying respect to one's ancestors. Families clean their ancestors' burial sites and decorate them with the deceased's favorite treats. Another tradition is...

White House taps University of Michigan's Robert Groves to lead the Census Bureau

Groves is an expert in statisical sampling-- which many Republicans oppose for the census.

Groves is a former Census Bureau associate director of statistical design, who served from 1990-92. He has spent decades researching ways to improve survey response rates. If confirmed by the Senate, he will take the helm less than a year before the decennial count, which has been beset by partisan bickering and will be used to apportion House seats and allocate billions in federal dollars.

Groves, 60,...

Major Cemeteries of Calcutta, India, to be Digitized

I spent some time in India about four years ago and was impressed by the lack of cemeteries. As a genealogist, I was very aware that cremation is prevalent manner of disposing of bodies. In my time there, I saw exactly one cemetery. In fact, my companions and I stopped to look at it and it seems that most of the headstones listed European names.

I was reminded of that experience tonight when I read the following announcement about some other cemeteries in the city of Calcutta (or Kolkata as the...

Update: Plus Edition Web Site

I worked almost two straight days on the comments problem on the new EOGN Plus Edition web site but was unable to resolve the problem. The software producer's Tech Support department was also unable to help. I gave up and installed a different software product. I believe the problems are fixed. At least the comments work well for me in testing. I'd appreciate it if a few Plus Edition subscribers would test it also.

Fry Family's Inherited Cancer

When Mr. and Mrs. George Fry landed on the shores of Massachusetts not long after the Pilgrims, they carried with them a secret that remained hidden for nearly four centuries. Their genes harbored a quirk that would travel through 16 generations of Americans, leaving a legacy of colon cancer. Now a Utah scientist, herself a descendant of Mayflower voyagers and Benjamin Franklin, has discovered the Fry family history.

Working with both cancer records and genealogy records, researchers found a...

Learn a Language Online

Perhaps you want to learn the language of your ancestors so that you can finally read those records. Another good reason is so that you can talk to distant cousins who still live in "the old country." Whatever the reason, learning a foreign language is a satisfying experience for most anyone, probably doubly satisfying if it is the language of your ancestors.

MSN-Sympatico has an article that covers the ins-and-outs of learning a foreign language online. The article highlights free...

Organizers emphasize the book is meant to be a collection of memories and anecdotes about local people, places, events and experiences — not heavily researched history.

Want a $50 Laptop Computer? But there's a Catch

Acer_Aspire_One I have written before about "netbook" computers. See my earlier article at http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/12/is-a-400-netboo.html. These are tiny laptop computers, typically weighing 2 1/2 pounds or less. Capabilities vary, but most of them are capable of running modern genealogy programs on Windows XP or on Linux. I even modified one of these tiny computers to run the Macintosh OS X operating system. (See
